Kafta bil Sanieh
Spiced ground meat kafta from the oven, layered with potatoes and tomatoes in tomato sauce.

Ingredients · for 4 servings
600 g ground beef
1 onion
1 bunch parsley
1 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp cinnamon
3 potatoes
3 tomatoes
2 tbsp tomato paste
300 ml water
4 tbsp olive oil
Salt, pepper
Instructions
- Very finely chop the onion and parsley and knead thoroughly with the ground meat, allspice, cinnamon, salt and pepper.
- Press the mixture into a flat, even layer in an oiled baking dish and pre-bake at 200 °C for 15 min.
- Peel the potatoes and cut into thin slices, then pan-fry in batches in olive oil until golden brown.
- Slice the tomatoes. Arrange the potatoes and tomatoes over the kafta in overlapping, shingle-like rows.
- Stir the tomato paste with water, salt and pepper and pour it over.
- Bake for another 25–30 min, until the sauce has thickened and the edges caramelize – serve with rice or flatbread.
